What exactly is a blog? And is it different to a webpage? Yes, while webpages remain relatively static and provide specific information about services you offer and information sheets, blogs are an ongoing stream of information. They may be short (400 words) or long (1000 words +) about a range of topics.

What blog content should you use for your small business?

Remember, we have small attention spans online, so if content is not useful or entertaining, then it won’t be read. If a visitor does not finish reading the post then they will move on to more engaging content somewhere else, possibly a competitor’s website.

A blog is a place where you can establish yourself as an expert in your field. Identify relevant, useful information that your potential (or existing) clients want to know more about.
A blog can create extra work outside of your clinical role and business demands. So, why is it so important to have a blog?

  • Google loves new and regular content. If Google recognizes your site as providing useful content to readers, then the algorithms will work in your favour and clients will find your business more easily.
  • Informative content establishes your expertise in your field
  • People like to share useful articles via social media and when they share your content, they are sharing your business and expertise. This has a flow on effect and more people will come back to your website. Your ‘home.’ That’s what you want.

What should you write about?

  • Make a list of all the common issues clients present to your service with. Then write short posts about each of these topics, providing some simple tips and where appropriate, include references to scientific studies.
  • Create a blog schedule. Regular content is the key. It’s no use posting a blog every six months followers want predictability and consistency. Schedule a new post every week or fortnight and watch how many new people visit your website.
  • Adhere to health advertising guidelines and be careful about what kind of ‘claims’ you make about your service. For Allied Health Professionals (psychologists, chiropractors etc.), the  Australian Health Practitioner AHPRA website has further information about this.

A blog is a great way for small businesses to get noticed and develop an online profile.
