Hello, my name is Tim Kizer. The next several paragraphs will hopefully be the most interesting written piece you have read on the Internet this week.What I would like to talk about in this guest post at the wonderful Australian Book Shelf blog is inspiration. Writers are routinely asked about their source of inspiration for a particular book, which means that it must be a very important topic to discuss. In my case, inspiration often comes from real life events, ranging from things happening in tiny towns to global scale calamities. No matter the nature or impact of such an event, I somehow manage to find inspiration in it.I will begin with a story about a Transportation Security Administration employee in Albany, NY, who complained to supervisors about her coworker. It is hard to believe, but this woman claimed that her colleague was a witch and had cast a spell on her. You can search for this story online, using keywords “TSA employee witch fired.” And based on the last keyword, one can guess that the suspected witch was fired.To me, this story definitely had an idea for a thriller hidden somewhere in it, and next thing you know, I write suspense novelette “Intoxication,” which deals with outlandish suspicions in the workplace.I have to confess I love wacky stories like this. In my spare time, I often browse major news hubs, looking for stories about regular people doing weird stuff or finding themselves in odd situations.Of course, not all news articles I come across are innocuous and funny. From time to time, I see those terrifying stories that I wish never had to be written and that prove to me that real life violence can be many times more gruesome than violence in fiction. I recently read about a group of five Florida teenagers who had ruthlessly tortured, killed, and burned a fifteen-year-old boy they all had known personally. The motive behind the murder was jealousy on the part of the group leader whose girlfriend used to date the victim. And the girlfriend actually helped lure the boy to the place where he was eventually killed! So next time you hear someone criticize a book or a movie for being too gory, too violent, remember this story. It is a tragedy that there are truly evil people in every society who will commit such unthinkable crimes. It breaks my heart to realize that even the most cringe-inducing horror books merely reflect the reality.I would like to conclude this post on a more positive note and tell you about the story that I am currently trying to turn into a novelette. It concerns a New Jersey woman doing her best to attain the dubious title of the world’s heaviest person. She weighs over 600 pounds right now and plans to reach 1,000 pounds by consuming 15,000 calories a day. And that’s not the most curious aspect of the story. This lady makes $80,000 a year selling subscriptions to her webcam stream to men who love watching her eat.
