Review: Vampyre Kisses is the first paranormal book in The Last Witch series by indie author Elizabeth Kolodziej.Faith and Trent meet at a bar. She doesn’t know he is a vampire and he realises that he cannot take her to his master to feed on because there is something unusual about her. It turns out Faith has been ‘kissed’ by a vampire which means she is under the protection of a powerful vampire so no-one can feed off her or kill her. Then Faith’s witchery ancestry emerges and she accepts this hidden part of her identity and tries to connect with it.The premise for this story is quite interesting but there were some problems in its execution. Firstly, the ‘voice’ was confusing. It is written as first POV for Faith as well as Trent with alternating chapters. The first four chapters are basically the same two scenes just retold from Faith and Trent’s perspective. I didn’t feel this was necessary as I didn’t really learn anything new from this strategy. Then the ending switches to third person and brings together all the characters from a narrator perspective. I think this confusion could have been solved by having the whole story in third person. The second issue I had with the story were the characters and the romance. Although I could connect with Faith in some ways, her motives were sometimes unclear. Trent was quite a detached character who I just didn’t connect with at all. And their first meeting did not ooze the chemistry that I would expect to have set up the rest of the story with them working together on various challenges. I also think it would have been more interesting if the vampires and werewolves were left out of the story as the witch storyline is what really drew me to this novel in the first place.As I said, Vampyre Kisses had an intriguing premise but there were some things I didn't like. However, if you would like a different spin on the paranormal genre with the witchery element in it you may find this enjoyable. I just don’t think it was for me.
