Book Review: Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Review: I had high expectations for Bloodlines after all the hype I have heard about the author and this new series. I am yet to read the Vampire Academy series, but since Richelle Mead has such a heavy following, I was keen to delve into her new world in the Bloodlines series.Dare I say, I was a little disappointed?! Don’t get me wrong, the setting created by the author was intriguing and the characters were quite well developed and engaging, but I think for me, the plot was too slow. To be honest, not much really happens until the last third of the book and even then there’s not much action or suspense.To give a brief overview of the storyline, if you haven’t read it yet: Sydney Melrose is an alchemist and it is her role to bridge the gap between humans and vampires so they can live together peacefully (and so that humans are oblivious to their bloodsucking neighbours). Sydney as a character was quite solid, but very difficult to connect with because she is borderline emotionless. She is rigid, socially inept and a little innocent about the ways of the world. She just didn’t have enough spunk in this first novel, but perhaps she will grow and evolve as the series persists. Oh, and there was no romance in the story which threw me out a bit. Quite unusual for a paranormal YA novel!Nevertheless, I did enjoy Bloodlines and was drawn in particularly by the secondary characters of vamps, Jill and Adrian. The author has a likeable writing style and can create a world that draws you in- I just wish there was more happening in it.A twist on the typical YA vampire stories, Bloodlines is a book that you may have to pick up a copy and decide for yourself.
