I read this book in one sitting and closed it with tears in my eyes because Suzanne Collins has a brilliant skill in storytelling, creating depth in characters that draw you in and making sure you can never guess what will happen next.Mockingjay takes on a vigilante route with Katniss, Peeta and Gale along with a bunch of other victors and people who hope to turn out the capitol and free the districts. Katniss gets quite banged up on many occasions and doesn’t really know who to trust. She is plagued by nightmares and is obviously experiencing the emotionally destructive after-effects of trauma and war. Katniss is such a strong character in this series that I really had a connection with her and wanted her to survive, even when I didn’t agree with her decisions or hoped she would be more ‘human.’In terms of the romance, I honestly had no idea who Katniss was going to choose until the very end, it got to the point where I thought, oh no she isn’t going to choose anyone she is going to choose to be alone. But she did choose someone. And I had to re-read the last chapter just to make sure I knew why Katniss chose him. I really didn’t think she would make that choice and I didn’t want her to, but I can understand why she did. I just wish things had turned out more happily for the other contender, or at least there could have been a final scene between the two of them, instead he just kind of goes on to live his own life. I also think the epilogue could have been eliminated…it didn’t seem to serve a purpose, other than to ensure there would be no continuation of the series.I know I’m being a little vague but I don’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t yet read the series.I am so excited to see how it has been adapted to a movie, which is due for release in March 2012.
