I was approached by BYDS (Bankstown Youth Development Service) to review their newest release under Westside Publications, titled Three Novelettes. BYDS is an arts-based centre in South-West Sydney. They have published a series of 5000 word mini-novels written by three girls all aged under the age of 12. It delves into the lives of South-Western Sydney residents Dorothy Kamal, Isabella Whitcher and Khadija Mossavi, who uniquely describe their lives and relationships in one of Australia's most linguistically and culturally diverse regions. Each novelette celebrates the importance of families to these young people. I also have two giveaway copies with thanks to BYDS and this should be up in the next couple of weeks.
The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay, caught my eye when i browsed through the Hachette new release catalogue for Feb 2012. Here's a snapshot of the synopsis: "I am Moth, a girl from the lowest part of Chrystie Street, born to a slum-house mystic and the man who broke her heart." So begins The Virgin Cure, a novel set in the tenements of lower Manhattan in the year 1871. As a young child, Moth's father smiled, tipped his hat and walked away from her forever. The summer she turned twelve, her mother sold her as a servant to a wealthy woman, with no intention of ever seeing her again.

I think I may have to sign up for some kind of Classics Reading Challenge this year to get motivated to read some of the classics i have lying around and haven't gotten to. I think because some of them are soo long, i get a bit overwhelmed just looking at them.
