The final book in the trilogy examines the lives of Xanthe and Maia, the Blake sister twins who live with Conn Largan and his mother in theSwan River colony, WA. Maia is Mrs Largan’s personal maid, very dedicated to her work and in love with Conn. Xanthe is a vivacious young housemaid who dreams of travelling the world, quite unusual for a young, single woman of her class during those times.When Ronan Macguire, Conn’s friend from Ireland arrives with the Blake sister inheritance, Xanthe’s dreams of travelling can now become a reality. For Maia, her dreams are shattered when Ronan arrives at their property withConn’s legal wife, Katherine in tow. Anna Jacobs has a wonderful way of writing really annoying characters and Katherine is one of them. She is completely disruptive to the household, lacks empathy and cares for only herself. But as her own history is revealed, it did spark some sympathy in me for her.Xanthe and Maia both have hurdles to jump over to find happiness, but I enjoyed the journey of watching these two strong women overcome adversity and not give up.I really recommend the Swan River series; historical romance fans will like the strong, smart Blake sisters and their adventures of settlement in earlyAustralia.
