I’m a therapist: what should I blog about?
5 ways to generate content ideas for your private practice blog
Ready to launch your blog?
Been blogging for a while but the ideas well has run dry?
Had so many ideas until you the moment you sat down at your computer?
I feel you. I’ve been there.
I’m here to give you simple ways to generate ideas for your private practice blog.
1. Have a niche or special interest? Start with that.
If you work within a niche or a particular speciality, then start with this. Why? Because when you write about what you know, it will shine through in your writing. It helps to position yourself as an expert in the field.
If you don't have a niche and work as a generalist, then start with an area of your practice that you have a particular interest in, or a condition that you see frequently. Then, make it as specific as possible. For example, rather than talking about 'anxiety' talk about anxiety in preteens or anxiety in pregnancy. When you drill down into a topic, the reader will feel more connected to the content. As if it were written just for them.
Writing about specific topics also helps boost your google ranking. If you google anxiety, it brings up a bazillion website pages (okay not quite a bazillion, but probably close), but when you choose anxiety in preteens or anxiety in pregnancy then you are honing down the search results in your favour.
2. Have a big topic to cover? Break it down.
Say you do want to talk about anxiety because you see people of all ages and backgrounds with this condition. Rather than trying to say all you have to say about the topic in one blog post, break down the topic over a series of blog posts.
For example, you could write about:
What is anxiety?
Symptoms of anxiety
Causes of anxiety
Anxiety treatments
And so on…
3. Common problems your clients face
Keep note of particular problems that your clients bring to you and the things you find yourself repeating to clients. Write about that.
4. Awareness days
Take inspiration from the multitude of awareness days/ weeks/ months in each calendar day and choose the ones that relate to the clients you see.
For example, World Sleep day is in March. Practitioners can take different angles on this topic:
Psychologist: Good sleep hygiene
Chiropractor: The best pillows for a good night's sleep
A naturopath: Best sleep tonics
Dentist: Stop grinding your teeth and get a good night's sleep
Get the picture? Once you get started you’ll find the ideas just flow!
5. Practitioner spotlight
If you work in a multidisciplinary practice or a larger practice, use your blog to showcase your staff and the different skills they have on offer. You could ask staff to contribute to the blog on an ad hoc or regular basis. Ask the same question to different clinicians and share with your readers the different responses.
Bonus Tip: Write a list!
Writing lists are fun. Blog posts with a list are a clever way to share ideas with your readers. They are often very shareable on social media too. For example:
Top 5 books for parenting teens
Top 5 podcasts on nutrition
Ten tips for a good night’s sleep
6 mistakes people when brushing their teeth
