Review: Evie is seventeen years old and desperate to get out of her small town and to escape the grief of losing her best friend in an accident and her boyfriend who betrayed her. Working two jobs to save money, Evie is easily tempted by a job offer from the new man in town, Victor who intends to open a boutique clothing store. She soon finds out that Victor is more than an employer, he is her mentor. When a bunch of young people- one with acidic skin and another with a scaly tail turn up at the shop with the intention to kill Evie, she has to fight back to survive. She discovers these people are demons and they want her dead because she is not just a teenage girl, she is also a demon hunter. Inheriting this title and skills from her parentage, Evie reluctantly embraces her new role in life to kill demons. Little does she know, there is a half-shadow demon, half-human living in her home. Lucas, who is on a personal mission to study the hunters and determine how to wipe them out, is renting a room from Evie’s mum. Lucas soon realises that the last thing he wants is to kill Evie and instead finds himself trying to protect her from his own kind.Alderson has once again come up with an intriguing storyline with likeable characters and fantastic superpowers. There are some parallels to her debut novel Hunting Lila, with a teenage girl discovering she has special skills and a mystery about her parents and how they were killed. The ‘fated’ relationship between Evie and Lucas is a little cliché and doesn’t stray from the current YA romance market. They hardly spoke to each other and he falls in love with her without even really knowing her. It would have been nice to see further development of the relationship so this was more realistic.Fated is an exciting YA supernatural story and I will surely read the sequel.
